You Tube: Music Technology
“At Bath Spa University College, a multimedia educational package is being developed for the National Curriculum. “The Music Key” – set to revolutionise the teaching of music and music technology in schools – is the work of Bath Spa’s Cendia (the Centre for Digital and Interactive Audio) in a joint venture with Sound Technology plc and is designed both for teachers and pupils of all ages.” This video devels into new technology which is set to “revolutionise” music education at all levels. Music Key is interactiv, and allows students to play, re-edit, and compose their own music and tunes using specific tools. Here, the constructionist theory comes into play, students have the power to construct their own learning. I think that in such a practical subject, that this theory comes into play.
The multimedia interface of this software sues text files and movie files to show students how to use it. The teacher can then just take on the role of facilitator, and just guide students as they can direct their own learning. The other positive about this software, is that it has been created according to the National Curriculum (UK). Teachers can use this software as a tool kit to plan lessons for a whole school year. I see this to be very helpful, as teacher can easily implement the collection of lesson plans in their music classroom.
With all the new music technologies, I believe that it is important that music and all its “traditional” components is still taught–not too get too carried away with everything that is new. This software allows students to learn traditional and leading edge music, and composing, arranging and music theatre. It clearly covers a great scope of music components using “cutting edge technology”.
This program is still being developed further, I can see the potential it has in Australian schools. With such technology, musical talent scan be unlocked.
